Reflections on My First Six Months as a Travel Advisor

Why I Chose to Become a Travel Advisor

From the outset, I intended this to be a side hustle. I knew that whatever I chose had to be something I was passionate about or at least closely related to my interests. After trying another side hustle connected to my day job and losing motivation, I realized I needed something fresh and exciting. I couldn't sustain the effort of doing similar work to my day job during my off-hours; it felt like I might as well just stay late at work every night. Becoming a travel agent appealed to me because of my love for travel and the idea of helping others find the best travel deals, just as I do for myself.

Lessons Learned and Growth Experienced

Over the past six months, I've gained a wealth of knowledge. I've learned the ins and outs of starting and managing my own business, which has given me a profound sense of entrepreneurial achievement. My understanding of the travel industry has expanded significantly, culminating in my recent completion of the Certified Cruise Counsellor (CCC) certification from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). I've also honed my skills in social media, business marketing, and advertising, and become proficient with various technology tools essential for travel advisors and business owners. Additionally, I've mastered the art of finding the best travel deals for both myself and my clients. As I continue on this exciting journey in the travel industry, I eagerly anticipate further growth and the many new travel experiences that lie ahead.

I truly enjoy this work, even though it might not replace my current career. With 30 years of experience, I've become an expert in my high-paying day job. However, I now envision my travel agency as a long-term endeavor that I can continue to pursue even after retiring from my primary career.
